    Short Stories2

Molly was unusually quiet at church on the Sunday after the dinner disappointment with Sean. When Sara saw Molly after the worship service, she knew the dinner with Sean didn't go well. All of Molly's other friends sensed that something was wrong as well.

    "Are you okay?" one asked.

Before Molly could reply, Sara answered, "She's a bit under the weather." She put an arm around Molly and pulled her aside.

"The dinner with Sean didn't go well, huh?" asked Sara quietly.

Molly looked at Sara - a true friend who knew her so well and who was always by her side when she needed her - and shook her head, biting her lip to keep the tears in.

"I'm so sorry!" Sara gave Molly a big hug. "Do you want to talk about it?"

    "Maybe later."

"Okay. Do you still want to go visit the hospital today?" asked Sara, referring to their monthly visit, as volunteers, to the children cancer ward planned for that afternoon.

Molly took a deep breath and said, "I don't really feel like going, but one of the boys will be operated on today, and I told him I would go see him before he went in. I've got to go."

"Okay," Sara looked at Molly and nodded.

When they got to the hospital, Molly and Sara each put on a white gown and surgical mask as required by the hospital. Sara needed to go to the restroom, so Molly went on ahead. Just as she was passing in front of a room in the Intensive Care Unit, a woman rushed out.

"Excuse me. Come take a look. His heart is racing!" the woman grabbed Molly by the hand and half dragged her in.

"Sorry, I... I don't work here," Molly tried to explain.

    47: 英雄醒来 The Hero Wakes

Molly quickly turned around before finishing her prayer.

The voice belonged to Sean. When he had first woken up, he saw a girl standing in front of the window who was talking by herself. Then he realized that she was talking about him. At first he was not quite sure who she was with her back to him. Since she was wearing a white robe, he thought that she was a nurse. But her voice sounded familiar. It was a voice that he had heard somewhere before. And it was not in the hospital. Then her calling him a friend reminded him of who it was. He knew it was the girl who had invited him to dinner the evening before. But he didn't quite know who she was talking to, so he asked.

"Oh! I didn't know you were awake," said Molly, glad that Sean was awake but a little embarrassed about the prayer. "I was just praying."

"Oh! Praying! I thought you were talking to yourself," replied Sean. "Were you praying for me?" asked Sean, even though he already knew that she was.

"Yes, I was!" admitted Molly. "I was praying that next time when I take you out to dinner, there'll be nobody that needs you to save!" said Molly playfully.

Sean chuckled and said, "You made it sound like I'm Superman!"

"Maybe you are!" said Molly jokingly. "Seriously, I think you were so brave to jump in front of the train to save someone. That was a very selfless act. I don't know if I could have done that if I were you."

"I'm glad I was there at just the right time," answered Sean, a little embarrassed by the compliment. "I don't know if I'll be able to do it one more time if it happens again."
