Molly was unusually quiet at church on the Sunday after the dinner disappointment with Sean. When Sara saw Molly after the worship service, she knew the dinner with Sean didn't go well. All of Molly's other friends sensed that something was wrong as well.

    "Are you okay?" one asked.

Before Molly could reply, Sara answered, "She's a bit under the weather." She put an arm around Molly and pulled her aside.

"The dinner with Sean didn't go well, huh?" asked Sara quietly.

Molly looked at Sara - a true friend who knew her so well and who was always by her side when she needed her - and shook her head, biting her lip to keep the tears in.

"I'm so sorry!" Sara gave Molly a big hug. "Do you want to talk about it?"

    "Maybe later."

"Okay. Do you still want to go visit the hospital today?" asked Sara, referring to their monthly visit, as volunteers, to the children cancer ward planned for that afternoon.

Molly took a deep breath and said, "I don't really feel like going, but one of the boys will be operated on today, and I told him I would go see him before he went in. I've got to go."

"Okay," Sara looked at Molly and nodded.

When they got to the hospital, Molly and Sara each put on a white gown and surgical mask as required by the hospital. Sara needed to go to the restroom, so Molly went on ahead. Just as she was passing in front of a room in the Intensive Care Unit, a woman rushed out.

"Excuse me. Come take a look. His heart is racing!" the woman grabbed Molly by the hand and half dragged her in.

"Sorry, I... I don't work here," Molly tried to explain.

    38: 倒影 Reflections

As the bus pulled away from the bus stop, Pearl looked out of the window. She saw the back of Kent in the auto repair shop. She wished she had not been so rude to him. Kent was always nice to her. But then all the boys she knew were nice to her... except one. The one boy with whom she had fallen in love was not nice to her any more. "What happened? What did I do wrong? Am I not pretty any more?" Pearl asked herself. She opened her pocket mirror and looked at herself. She was horrified by what she saw.

The sobbing during the night had left her with puffy eyes, and the lack of sleep made them bloodshot. She quickly put away the mirror. The beautiful eyes that so many people had admired now looked more like fat Chinese dumplings. Those were the same eyes that Edward had once whispered in her ears saying he had lain awake thinking about. "Edward, Edward, Edward! How can you be so sweet and then suddenly be so cruel?" Pearl thought. "I want to be your wife and give you a beautiful baby." As she sat there thinking, she put her hand on her belly, as if to feel the baby inside.

Pearl's belly was not big yet. In fact it was not noticeable that she was carrying a baby. But she knew that it would grow bigger and bigger. She had seen pregnant women before. They grew bigger and bigger. Even their face grew. She shuddered at the thought. "No boys will like me for sure when I have a big belly," she told herself. She could not bear that thought. "I have no choice but to get rid of it. I'm doing the right thing. And I'm protecting our family name."
