Finding the Way
After getting off the bus, Pearl went into a store to ask for directions.
"Can you tell me how to get to Peace Avenue?" said Pearl.
The shopkeeper, probably the owner of the store, was an older lady in her sixties. She looked at Pearl, then glanced at her belly, and said, "Go straight along this road, then when you see the pawn shop, turn right. The first cross street will be Peace Avenue." After another glance at Pearl's belly, she asked, "Looking for Betsy?"
Pearl was surprised by that question. She had thought Betsy's to be a secret place. "Yes," she replied quietly with averted eyes.
"Then turn right at Peace Avenue. You'll see a church on the left and a nightclub on the right. There's an alley next to the nightclub. Go down the alley and go to the fourth door. Betsy's place is on the fourth floor," the lady gave Pearl detailed directions. She seemed to have given those directions many times.
With a quick 'thank you', Pearl hurried off.
The directions were easy to follow. Pearl got to Peace Avenue, turned right, and soon saw the big church on the left. Built with big pieces of white stones, the church was quite beautiful. The bell tower had just started to ring. It was a tune that sounded very good which she did not recognize. But she was not there to listen to a song. She looked to her right and saw the nightclub. A man stumbled out the door, obviously drunk. Pearl went into the alley next to it. After going through the fourth doorway, she went up to the fourth floor.
She knocked on the door. No reply. She knocked on it some more. Still no reply. It was only after the fourth time that she heard some footsteps inside.
