    Short Stories2

Molly was unusually quiet at church on the Sunday after the dinner disappointment with Sean. When Sara saw Molly after the worship service, she knew the dinner with Sean didn't go well. All of Molly's other friends sensed that something was wrong as well.

    "Are you okay?" one asked.

Before Molly could reply, Sara answered, "She's a bit under the weather." She put an arm around Molly and pulled her aside.

"The dinner with Sean didn't go well, huh?" asked Sara quietly.

Molly looked at Sara - a true friend who knew her so well and who was always by her side when she needed her - and shook her head, biting her lip to keep the tears in.

"I'm so sorry!" Sara gave Molly a big hug. "Do you want to talk about it?"

    "Maybe later."

"Okay. Do you still want to go visit the hospital today?" asked Sara, referring to their monthly visit, as volunteers, to the children cancer ward planned for that afternoon.

Molly took a deep breath and said, "I don't really feel like going, but one of the boys will be operated on today, and I told him I would go see him before he went in. I've got to go."

"Okay," Sara looked at Molly and nodded.

When they got to the hospital, Molly and Sara each put on a white gown and surgical mask as required by the hospital. Sara needed to go to the restroom, so Molly went on ahead. Just as she was passing in front of a room in the Intensive Care Unit, a woman rushed out.

"Excuse me. Come take a look. His heart is racing!" the woman grabbed Molly by the hand and half dragged her in.

"Sorry, I... I don't work here," Molly tried to explain.

Hi, I am John Doe. I love stories. Even now, I still read stories all the time. Reading while listening to a story is an enjoyable way for you to learn new words and improve your English.

    49: 男友,女友 Boyfriend, Girlfriend

"Married?" Sean was quite surprised that Molly would say such a thing. "Did they report that on the news too?"

"Oh, not yet, because I told them just now, but the reporters were taking notes," Molly replied.

As Molly weaved her story, she tried very hard to keep a straight face, but the corners of her mouth just kept wanting to break into one of her hearty laughs.

"You can't tell them that. I am not married," protested Sean.

"Do you have a girlfriend?" seizing the opportunity, Molly asked.

    "Nope," replied Sean.

    "Why not?"

"Well..." Sean looked at Molly, wondering why she had asked that question. "I'm concentrating on work and school. I don't have time."

"Oh..." mumbled Molly, a little disappointed at Sean's reply.

"Do you have a boyfriend?" having nothing else he could think of to say, Sean asked.

"Not yet," Molly answered, looking at Sean with hopeful eyes. "Why?"

"Oh, I'm just asking..." Sean stammered. "Hey, you need to tell them that I'm not married - you know, those people outside." Sean changed the subject before he had to answer any more questions on topics he was not prepared to share about.

"No, I think I'll go and tell them that you have 3 wives and 10 kids and don't have time for them!"

"No!" Sean protested, but then he saw the mischief in Molly's eyes and her smile. "Did you really tell them that I was married?"

Molly couldn't help it any more. She broke out laughing.

"You!" Sean realized that he had fallen for her story. "You've been pulling my leg."

Molly laughed and laughed. Sean stretched out his hands and acted like he was going to tickle her. Molly caught his fingers with hers, giggling.
