    Short Stories2

Molly was unusually quiet at church on the Sunday after the dinner disappointment with Sean. When Sara saw Molly after the worship service, she knew the dinner with Sean didn't go well. All of Molly's other friends sensed that something was wrong as well.

    "Are you okay?" one asked.

Before Molly could reply, Sara answered, "She's a bit under the weather." She put an arm around Molly and pulled her aside.

"The dinner with Sean didn't go well, huh?" asked Sara quietly.

Molly looked at Sara - a true friend who knew her so well and who was always by her side when she needed her - and shook her head, biting her lip to keep the tears in.

"I'm so sorry!" Sara gave Molly a big hug. "Do you want to talk about it?"

    "Maybe later."

"Okay. Do you still want to go visit the hospital today?" asked Sara, referring to their monthly visit, as volunteers, to the children cancer ward planned for that afternoon.

Molly took a deep breath and said, "I don't really feel like going, but one of the boys will be operated on today, and I told him I would go see him before he went in. I've got to go."

"Okay," Sara looked at Molly and nodded.

When they got to the hospital, Molly and Sara each put on a white gown and surgical mask as required by the hospital. Sara needed to go to the restroom, so Molly went on ahead. Just as she was passing in front of a room in the Intensive Care Unit, a woman rushed out.

"Excuse me. Come take a look. His heart is racing!" the woman grabbed Molly by the hand and half dragged her in.

"Sorry, I... I don't work here," Molly tried to explain.

Hi, I am John Doe. I love stories. Even now, I still read stories all the time. Reading while listening to a story is an enjoyable way for you to learn new words and improve your English.

    51: 引力 The Pull

Molly felt the pull from Sean. She did not expect that since she thought somehow she had hurt Sean as they were playing around. As the pull got her slightly out of balance, her natural reaction was to lean back to catch her balance. But in that instant, Molly looked at Sean. His eyes were looking at her eyes, and then at her lips. Molly knew what was in Sean's mind. "He's going to kiss me," she thought. With that her heart was filled with unspeakable joy. She could feel it galloping like a wild horse. She could feel blood filling her face and her head. "But then he had just said earlier that he had no time for a girlfriend. Maybe he was just saying that. Yes, he must have just been saying that," Molly reasoned with herself. But then she told herself, "You hardly know this guy. Shouldn't you wait till you know him better?"

Even though Molly was fun-loving and outgoing, having a mother who talked with her from time to time about boy-girl relationships, she was careful. After all, she didn't like heartaches. Her mother had quoted a Bible verse to her before - something about guarding her heart. She was glad to have a mother whom she can talk to. Her mother treated her as an adult and did not dictate to her what to do. As a result Molly often told her things that most of her classmates didn't tell their parents. Molly had told her about Sean and how much she liked him. "Just remember to guard your heart and be careful" was what her mother said. At this moment, Molly didn't know how to do either.

"He rescued me, so the least I can do is to give him a kiss. It's just a kiss anyway."

A question from Teacher John Doe:
"In life, we have to make thousands and thousands of decisions. Some are not very important, but some can change the course of our lives. Have you made any decision that changed your life or that you regret? Write and tell me."
