印度尼西亚 - 地理 Indonesia - Land

Hello friends, and welcome to Window on the World. Today we will visit the Republic of Indonesia. Indonesia is five times the size of Japan! It is part of the Malay Archipelago in South East Asia. Do you remember that an archipelago is a chain of islands? Indonesia has a total of 13,677 islands but only 6,000 are named.

The major islands of Indonesia are separated by the Indian and Pacific oceans. The northern islands include Borneo, Sulawesi and the Moluccas. The southern islands are long and narrow. They are Sumatra, Java, Bali, Madura and Borneo. The largest city and capital of Indonesia is Jakarta. These mountainous islands were formed by volcanoes. There are still about 75 active volcanoes, and earthquakes are frequent. There are several very long rivers that flow across Indonesia.

Indonesia has a tropical climate with only 2 seasons. The wet season is from November to March and monsoon storms are common. The dry season is from April to October and the weather is more moderate. The temperature ranges between 20 to 32 degrees centigrade.

Next week, we will find out about the people of Indonesia. I hope you will be listening next week when we open our Window on the World.

Goodbye friends!
