我最爱的老师 My Favorite Teacher

[mp3]

There were eight grades to be taught each day in that one room. I think our teachers must have been very smart to teach so many subjects. One of the teachers was Mrs. Halstead. She was my favorite and a friend of my parents. In fact, she was staying in our home at the time I was born, on Christmas Day in 1935.

She had lived in a little house across the road from the school, but that cold winter her house caught fire and burned to the ground. Her husband went to live in his barbershop in town. There was a large red and white striped pole by the door. It marked the spot where we got our haircuts.

Mrs. Halstead needed a place to stay close to the school and she became our guest. Every morning, while it was still dark, she carried her lantern and walked up the road to the schoolhouse, which was about a mile away, to make sure there was a fire in the big black stove. She wanted the children to have a warm place to study their lessons.

As a baby, I cried a lot from colic and this teacher would carry me around at night so my mother could rest. Perhaps that is where the bonding between us began. She always wanted to share. One time she cut a candy bar into three pieces so that my sisters and I could have a treat. Many years later, she lived close to where we lived and I could visit her on occasion. She was quite elderly, but there was still a special love between us. She always gave me a little gift from her cupboard before I left. She was a wonderful lady to her students and we all liked her.
