逛杂货店 Visting the Grocery Store

[mp3]

I will never forget my first trip to the grocery store on the island. The store was tiny and cockroaches scampered around the items on the shelves. Most of the canned foods were outdated and the cans were dented, as if someone had pounded them with a hammer. There was one small freezer in the corner and when I looked, to my dismay, I saw chicken wings, refrozen pork chops and tripe. Where was the hamburger or beef that I was used to cooking? I learned to make delicious and nourishing chicken corn soup and other dishes.

One day I wanted to make a special recipe and asked the manager if they had any wide egg noodles, but he did not know what they were. From the back of the store, I heard someone laughing. It was another lady who had lived there for a little while. I used spaghetti instead.

Fresh produce was at a premium on the island. There were expensive, imported apples and oranges. We visited the banana boat often to buy bananas. Weeks would go buy when we couldn't find potatoes, sugar or lettuce. One day I was able to buy a small head of lettuce. I was so excited at the thought of having fresh salad for our supper that night. While I was busy outside, our pet monkey grabbed the head of lettuce from the counter. He ran around the house with it under his arm like a football, and he shredded it everywhere. After I caught him, I gathered the leaves, washed them off and made a salad for supper. I was not happy with that monkey but could not waste the expensive treasure that he took for a toy.
